In the paintings of Travis Shilling we see a spiritual landscape, a slow heartache, and like no other painter, the sensation of what it feels like to be Anishnaabek in these times. Sections of the past peek through, seemingly disparate elements coalesce to form a bridge of feeling. That something is missing doesn’t stop time, time marches along carrying us all whether we are prepared or not. Cultures grow and change, collide with fury and ebb back leaving survivors or events we are unsure how to even label. All the same being in the times it is necessary to show the reality of the moment, the spirit of the times. So that we can know we are alive in the present moment, surrounded by memories and fragments of the past but living now.
Welcome to the zeitgeist.
